Toyota no longer prints them for this generation, but here are reliable sources: Symptom: Hard start / long crank
Avoid: Generic "All Toyota 4-cylinder" PDFs on random sites. They always skip the high-pressure fuel system.
Because fuel does not wash over the intake valves (unlike port injection), the 1AZ-FSE suffers from carbon buildup on the intake valves. Furthermore, if previous owners used poor oil, this engine is prone to oil sludge.
What the manual must cover: Detailed instructions for intake manifold removal, walnut blasting procedures for valve cleaning, and oil pump strainer inspection. A generic manual will tell you to "check for sludging." The 1AZ-FSE manual will show you how to drop the oil pan and clean the pickup tube—a critical step if you hear timing chain rattle. Symptom: Rough idle when warm
The pump (driven off the exhaust camshaft) can leak fuel into the engine oil. Smell your dipstick. If it smells like petrol, stop driving.
Manual procedure: Replace pump gasket and spill valve. Torque to 9.8 N·m.
Warning: Never loosen the high-pressure lines with the engine warm. Fuel is at 120 bar. Always depressurize first (remove fuel pump relay and crank engine).
The Variable Valve Timing system on the 1AZ-FSE is hydraulic. The manual contains a specific procedure for checking the VVT-i controller for lock pin breakage, a common failure point on high-mileage units.
