Oil pump relief valve opening pressure: 450–550 kPa (65–80 psi).

Water pump – driven by serpentine belt, no serviceable bearing; replace as assembly.

Because fuel does not wash over the intake valves (unlike port injection), the 1AZ-FSE suffers from carbon buildup on the intake valves. Furthermore, if previous owners used poor oil, this engine is prone to oil sludge.

What the manual must cover: Detailed instructions for intake manifold removal, walnut blasting procedures for valve cleaning, and oil pump strainer inspection. The pump (driven off the exhaust camshaft) can leak fuel into the engine oil. Smell your dipstick. If it smells like petrol, stop driving.
