Before you look at a pin diagram, you must know which ECU you have. Toyota used at least three distinct ECU configurations for the 1KZ-TE engine over its production run (approx. 1993–2006).
You need at minimum:
If you are doing a swap and need to get the engine running on a standalone harness, these are the pins you need to focus on first.
Connector A (Injection / Power)
Connector B (Sensors & Controls)
Connector C (Transmission - Auto Only)
Immobilizer Problems: Many half-cut engines (especially from Toyota Surf/4Runners) come with an immobilizer system. If your engine cranks but does not fire, check if the injector light flashes rapidly. 1kz ecu pinout
Glow Plug Relay: The glow plug system is controlled by the ECU but often requires a separate heavy-duty relay. Ensure the **Glow Control
Solution: The 1KZ-TE tach signal is a 0-12V square wave, but some old tachometers (diesel mechanical) expect a different waveform. Install a tachometer adapter (e.g., Dakota Digital SGI-8) or add a 1k ohm pull-up resistor between C3 and A1.
| Pin | Wire Color | Function | Electrical Spec | |------|-------------|-------------------------------|------------------| | A1 | White/Red | Battery +12V (constant) | 11-14V | | A2 | White/Black | Main relay (IG SW) | 11-14V when ignition ON | | A3 | Black/White | ECU Ground (power ground) | <0.5 ohms to battery negative | | A4 | Black | Sensor ground (analog) | 0V reference | | A10 | Yellow/Black | Injection pump – timing control valve | 0-12V (PWM signal) | | A11 | Blue/Red | Injection pump – spill valve | 0-8V (PWM) | | A14 | Red/Black | Stop solenoid (fuel cut) | 12V when running; 0V off | | A20 | Green/White | Glow plug relay control | 12V during pre-heat | | A24 | Black/Orange | Engine control relay (ECU main) | 12V ignition ON | Before you look at a pin diagram, you
Common Failure: Pin A3 (ground) corrodes. Symptoms include random stalling and low injection pump pressure.
Solution: Toyota changed wire colors during production. Never trust color alone. Always verify continuity from the sensor back to the ECU plug. For example, "THW" (Coolant temp) might be Green/White on a KZN185, but Red/Blue on a KZN130.
The ECU has 3 connectors:
| Connector | Pin Count | Typical Color | Function Group | |-----------|-----------|---------------|----------------| | A (Top) | 24 pins | Gray | Sensors, power, grounds | | B (Middle) | 16 pins | Gray | Actuators (injectors, EGR, etc.) | | C (Bottom) | 22 pins | Gray | Automatic transmission (A/T only) |
Manual transmission vehicles may have connector C partially populated or missing.
