Because of the architecture, the camera’s wide-angle lens naturally captures not just your porch, but 80% of your neighbor’s living room, kitchen, and front door. This proximity issue has led to lawsuits between neighbors where the remedy isn't criminal charges, but civil injunctions forcing the camera owner to install physical blinders or privacy shields on the lens. Recommendation: When shopping
If you have indoor cameras, put them on a smart plug or a dedicated circuit with a physical kill switch. Turn them off when you have guests, a cleaning service, or a babysitter who deserves to work without being surveilled. Honor their autonomy.
Install your camera and then physically stand 20 feet away. Look at what the lens captures. Can you see your neighbor's front door? Their window? Their driveway? If yes, install a physical "privacy mask" (a piece of electrical tape on the dome) or use the software's privacy zone feature to black out that portion of the image.
Security camera companies are in a feature arms race. AI detection, facial recognition, package recognition, and vehicle tracking are the new frontiers. However, these features are privacy nightmares in disguise.
Recommendation: When shopping, look for features that enhance privacy: Physical privacy shutters (lenses that physically close when the camera is off), local storage (SD cards) to avoid the cloud, and end-to-end encryption.
