Django Unchained 4k Blu Ray
Let’s address the big question: Is the 4K transfer a noticeable upgrade?
The original Django Unchained was finished as a 2K digital intermediate (DI)—meaning the film was edited and color-graded at a 2K resolution (2048x1080). For this 4K Blu-ray, Lionsgate has performed an upscale from the 2K master, not a native 4K scan (since the film was shot on 35mm but finished digitally at 2K, a common practice of the early 2010s).
However, do not let “2K upscale” deter you. The real magic lies in HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Wide Color Gamut.
Because the film was shot on 35mm, the uptick in resolution is noticeable but not artificially sharpened. You can see the weave in Django’s blue velvet suit, the pores on Leonardo DiCaprio’s sweating forehead during the dinner scene, and even the distressing on the saddles. The 4K Blu-ray disc retains the natural film grain without scrubbing it away, respecting the photochemical origins of the movie.
The Django Unchained 4K Blu-ray is not a revolutionary re-edit of the film; it is the definitive way to watch the film. The original Blu-ray served its purpose, but in a world where The Revenant and 1917 set the bar for 4K reference discs, Django finally feels like it belongs in the same league.

Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
If you want to see Leonardo DiCaprio smash a glass in 4K HDR, or watch Jamie Foxx ride away from Candyland with the deep blacks of the night sky surrounding him, buy the 4K. Django Unchained deserves to be unchained from the limitations of 1080p.
Final Line: The D is silent, but the 4K HDR is loud.
