Doctor Who 2005 2013 Christmas Special The Time... Today

The Premise: The Doctor receives a mysterious message broadcast throughout the universe. The message is coming from a single, unknown planet. Upon investigation, the Doctor discovers that every one of his greatest enemies—Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, Sontarans, and others—has gathered in orbit around this planet. They are terrified of the message and are ready to go to war to stop it.

The Setting: The planet is a small, colony town called Christmas. The town is completely devoted to the holiday, and strangely, the residents never leave. The Doctor lands and discovers the truth: the planet is actually Trenzalore, the final resting place of the Doctor he saw in a previous episode ("The Name of the Doctor").

The Truth of the Siege: The message is coming from a crack in the universe (last seen in Season 5). The Time Lords of Gallifrey, trapped in a pocket universe, are calling out, asking, "Doctor Who?" If the Doctor speaks his true name, the Time Lords will return through the crack, bringing Gallifrey back. However, if Gallifrey returns, the alien fleets in the sky will burn the planet to ashes to prevent another Time War.

The Siege of Trenzalore: The Doctor makes a noble choice. He decides to stay and protect the town of Christmas so the Time Lords cannot return (saving the universe from war), but also preventing the enemies from destroying the town. He sends Clara home to safety, but she returns to find that centuries have passed.

We see the Doctor age hundreds of years in this one town, fighting a silent, defensive war to protect the people of Christmas. He grows old, weary, and frail. Doctor Who 2005 2013 Christmas Special The Time...

The Climax: The Doctor is now an ancient man, near the end of his final regeneration (having used up all his lives). The Daleks are the last enemy standing, and they are invading the town. The Doctor is too weak to fight them off. In a moment of hope, the Time Lords grant him a brand new regeneration cycle through the crack in the wall. This restores his strength and gives him a new lease on life.

The Regeneration: With a burst of regeneration energy, the Doctor destroys the Dalek ships. He returns to the TARDIS, where he has one last hallucination of Amy Pond (the first face his face ever saw). He removes his bow tie, says his goodbyes, and regenerates into the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi).

The introduction of the Eleventh Doctor’s greatest companion: Clara Oswin Oswald (Jenna Coleman). Set in Victorian London, the Great Intelligence manifests as sentient snow. The Doctor, grieving the loss of the Ponds, has abandoned the universe and lives on a cloud above London. Christmas Eve forces him back into action.

This episode coined the phrase “The Time of the Doctor” as a prophecy. The snow, the memory worm, and the return of the Ice Governess all point to a single truth: Christmas is the one time of year when the Doctor cannot refuse a cry for help.

Note: The final Eleventh Doctor story, aired on Christmas Day 2013.

The Final Stand of the Eleventh Doctor: A Guide to "The Time of the Doctor"

Broadcast on December 25, 2013, "The Time of the Doctor" serves as the monumental ninth Christmas special of the revived Doctor Who series and the swan song for Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor. Written by then-showrunner Steven Moffat, the episode effectively ties up years of narrative threads, from the cracks in time to the fabled fields of Trenzalore. Key Episode Details Original Air Date: December 25, 2013 Runtime: Approximately 60 minutes Director: Jamie Payne Writer: Steven Moffat Main Cast: Matt Smith as The Eleventh Doctor Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald Peter Capaldi as The Twelfth Doctor (Introduction) Orla Brady as Tasha Lem Plot Summary: The Siege of Trenzalore

The story begins with thousands of alien species—including the Daleks, Cybermen, and Weeping Angels—orbiting the planet Trenzalore, drawn by a mysterious signal that no one can decipher. The Doctor and Clara discover that the signal is being broadcast through a crack in reality from a human settlement aptly named Christmas.

The signal is revealed to be a question from the Time Lords, trapped in a pocket universe: "Doctor Who?". If the Doctor answers with his true name, they will return, but doing so would reignite the Time War as the massed alien forces would immediately attack.

The Doctor chooses to stay and defend the town of Christmas, ultimately spending hundreds of years protecting its inhabitants as he ages into his final life. Because of the "War Doctor" and the Tenth Doctor's aborted regeneration, the Eleventh Doctor reveals he has no more regenerations left and is truly dying of old age. A New Regeneration Cycle

In the episode's climax, as the Doctor prepares for a final stand against the Daleks, Clara pleads with the Time Lords through the crack in time to save him. The Time Lords respond by bestowing a completely new regeneration cycle upon the Doctor. This explosive burst of regenerative energy destroys the Dalek fleet and allows the Doctor to rejuvenate before his final transformation into the Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi.
