On Gorenje washing machines, the E5 error code typically signifies a drainage problem. The machine’s internal sensors have detected that water is not leaving the drum as quickly as it should, or not at all, within a specific timeframe. Because the machine cannot drain the water, it will not proceed to the spin cycle or allow the door to open for safety reasons.

On most Gorenje washing machines (including portable, semi-automatic, and fully automatic models), E5 indicates that the machine is not filling with water correctly or is taking too long to reach the required water level. The internal control board has a timer: if the machine doesn’t detect a rise in water level within a few minutes after starting a cycle, it aborts the fill and displays E5.

Most portable Gorenje washers require the drain hose to be hooked no higher than 1 meter (about 39 inches) from the floor. If the hose is looped too high or inserted deep into a standpipe, the pump cannot expel water against gravity, triggering E5.

Portable washers rely on gravity + pump. If the drain hose goes up too high (e.g., into a tall laundry sink), water may not exit fast enough.
