Fault - Please Restart The Game: How To Fix Gta 5 Fatal Error - Unrecoverable
The error often appears when GTA V’s memory allocation exceeds available commit limit, even with sufficient free RAM.
Corruption is the #1 cause of the unrecoverable fault. The method depends on your platform.
Fix 1: Delete Settings Files (90% success for launch/loading crashes)
Navigate to:
Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V\Profiles\[YourProfileID]
Delete: cfg.dat and pc_settings.bin
(Don’t delete cloudsave.dat – that’s your save progress.) The error often appears when GTA V’s memory
Fix 2: Increase Virtual Memory
Fix 3: Force DirectX 10.1 (Bypasses DX11 TDR issues)
Add these command line arguments to Rockstar Games Launcher or Steam launch options:
-DX10 or -DX10_1
You’ll lose some reflections but gain stability. Click Set → OK → Restart
Fix 4: Disdable All Overlays & Hooking
Fix 5: For Modded Games Only – Restore Original gameconfig.xml
Modded gameconfig files that increase vehicle/ped memory pools cause this error after 20–30 min of freeroam. Replace with gameconfig.xml from the latest “Heap Limit Adjuster” mod (not the vanilla one, but a properly patched version). Corruption is the #1 cause of the unrecoverable fault
If all steps fail, a surface-level reinstall (via Steam’s “Delete Local Content”) often leaves configuration and cached shaders. Perform a deep purge:
Using "Express Install" often leaves old driver fragments behind.
Remove any overclocks (including XMP profiles for RAM). GTA V’s engine is extremely sensitive to memory timings. Run everything at stock speeds. If the crash stops, you can incrementally overclock again, but the error was instability.
