Idoia Durante Top Page

Idoia Durante’s Top series is a masterclass in less-is-more. It is proof that you do not need figures, landscapes, or political manifestos to create arresting art. Sometimes, all you need is a circle, a drop of paint, and the patience to watch it fall.

Before diving into the mechanics of the Top series, it is worth understanding the hand behind the brush. Hailing from the Basque Country, Durante is a graduate of the University of the Basque Country’s Faculty of Fine Arts. Her early work was heavily influenced by the Geometric Abstraction movement of the mid-20th century, as well as the Zero and Op Art movements.

Durante is not interested in telling a specific story. Instead, she is interested in creating a specific sensation. She once noted in an interview, “I want my paintings to feel like a held breath—the moment before the exhale.” That tension is palpable in every inch of the Top series.

Unlike the chaotic drips of Abstract Expressionism (think Pollock), Durante’s drips are controlled, slow, and heavy. She uses highly diluted oil paint mixed with resin, allowing the pigment to flow down a vertically positioned canvas. However, she intervenes with surgical precision, using tools to carve lines into the wet paint or block the flow to create "steps" and "shelves." Idoia Durante’s Top series is a masterclass in

The result is a visual record of gravity. The top of the canvas holds a dense, vibrant pool of color. As your eye travels down, the color thins out, becoming a ghost of itself.

While specific awards are often attributed to the programs she leads rather than her personally, Pensamiento Crítico has received critical acclaim for its commitment to social reporting. Durante is widely respected in the Basque Country as a credible and authoritative voice in social journalism.
