“Early frost coming tonight,” her assistant warns.
“I don’t care about weather,” Kao says. “I care about Q4 earnings.”

That night, walking home alone through the city’s first bitter frost, she slips on black ice. When she wakes, she can hear every unfulfilled wish from every person who ever walked that street — children wanting parents home for Christmas, workers hoping not to be fired, old men missing their late wives.
