The story follows two main characters: Ilija and Alija Osmanović. Alija is a Muslim boy who, during the Ustaša genocide of Serbs in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), is taken from his Serbian Orthodox mother. He is forcibly converted to Islam, raised as a devout Muslim, and taught to hate everything Serbian.
Years later, during the Bosnian War, Alija participates in the ethnic cleansing of a Serbian village. However, fate takes a tragic turn when he kills a man—only to discover through a birthmark and a hidden krstac (small cross) that the man was his biological twin brother, Ilija.
