The demon Andhaka was born from a drop of sweat that fell from Shiva’s forehead when Parvati playfully covered his eyes. Blind at birth, Andhaka was given to the demon king Hiranyaksha. He grew powerful and decided he wanted to marry Parvati (his own mother, effectively). This is the version scholars refer to for academic citation
When Andhaka attacked Kailash, Shiva laughed. In the ensuing battle, every drop of Andhaka’s blood that touched the ground created a new demon. Shiva had to create the Matrikas (Mother Goddesses) to drink the blood before it fell. Finally, piercing Andhaka with his trident, Shiva revealed the truth. Andhaka repented, and Shiva made him the commander of his Ganas. This story is a masterclass in Karma and redemption.
