English Upd — Margam Kali Lyrics In

| Old Version (Incorrect) | UPD Version (Correct) | Reason | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Vienna kappal | Vannu kappal | Vienna is a city; Vannu means "came." | | Nadodi rajan | Nāṭṭu rājāv | Nadodi is a wanderer; Nāṭṭu is the King of the land. | | Puli chamman | Puli chāṭṭam | Chamman is seasoning; Chāṭṭam is a jump. |

Let’s look at a common opening verse of Margam Kali, which invokes the Trinity.

Original Malayalam (Phonetic): “Thripparayil ninnum irangunna janaame… Unaroo, unaroo, makkale…”

Old Translation (Pre-1990s): “The congregation descending from the great high place… Awaken, awaken, O children of the covenant.”

UPD (Updated/Modern English) Lyric: “From the sacred hill we begin our sacred flight, Rise up, O daughters of the ancient rite. The wind carries the scent of the distant shore, Where the Cross was planted forevermore.”

Notice the difference? The UPD version uses active verbs ("rise up") and rhyme to mimic the song-like quality of the original, making it singable in English rather than just readable.

To understand the lyrics, you must understand the story. "Margam" means "path" or "way" (referring to Christianity), while "Kali" means "play" or "dance." Unlike the frenetic energy of Bollywood, Margam Kali is a narrative art form.

It tells the story of the Thomma Parvam (The Song of Thomas)—the journey of St. Thomas the Apostle as he arrives in Kerala in 52 AD to establish the church. The dance mimics the movement of ships, the twisting paths of forests, and the formation of ancient Christian communities.

Note: These are the standard opening verses of the most common Margam Kali tradition (the Knanaya or Syro-Malabar version).

A standard Margam Kali performance consists of three distinct parts in the lyrics:

If you're looking for a specific song, here are a few general Margam Kali lyrics in English that might give you an idea of the themes and tone of the songs:

The traditional lyrics, known as Margam Kali Pattu, consist of approximately 400 lines divided into 14 stanzas (padas). These verses combine Malayalam with Syriac and Tamil influences.

Subject Matter: The lyrics describe St. Thomas’s arrival in Malabar (50 CE), his miracles, the establishment of the seven and a half churches, his friendship with the Chola king, and his eventual martyrdom. Common Key Words in Syriac: Maran: Our Lord Alaha: God Mishiha: Christ Ruha: Spirit

The "Palace" Legend: A core theme in the lyrics is the story of St. Thomas being commissioned by King Chola to build a palace, but instead using the money for charity, explaining that the "true palace" is in heaven. Performance Structure

The Lamp (Nilavilakku): Dancers move in a circle around a central lamp, which symbolizes Christ, while the dancers represent the twelve disciples.

Vandana Ganam: The performance begins with this introductory invocation song.

Musical Style: Originally performed without instruments other than small cymbals (kuzhitalam) played by the lead singer (Asan). The rhythm is a blend of Syrian church music and Carnatic styles.

Attire: Performers traditionally wear simple white garments. Women typically wear the Chatta and Mundu (traditional Christian blouse and wrap) along with specialized jewelry like the Mekkamothiram (earrings worn on the upper ear).
