Critics were surprised by Midnight Sun. Many expected a cheap cash-grab, but what they got was a deep character study. Edward is a hilarious narrator (his hatred for Jessica Stanley and Mike Newton is pure comedy), but also deeply tragic. He hears the thoughts of everyone around him—every desire, every lie. The book adds context to the "sparkle" scene (Edward describes his skin as feeling like poison), the baseball scene (we see the game from the perspective of super-speed), and the final fight in the ballet studio.
