Once installed and configured, here is the basic workflow:

Set Temporary Folder (optional but recommended):
Enable Unicode support (if your shapes have foreign characters):
Click OK – SFM is now ready.
Inside the extracted folder (or your MSTS root folder), you should see:
Now that the install is finished, let’s look at three real-world tasks that make this utility essential.
DO NOT install into Program Files or Program Files (x86). Windows UAC will block write permissions.
Recommended location:
C:\MSTS\UTILITIES\ShapeFileManager\
Or directly inside your MSTS root folder:
C:\MSTS\ShapeFileManager\
Why? SFM modifies .s files in place. Installing outside protected system folders avoids permission errors.
Because MSTS is an older simulation (released in 2001), utilities like Shape File Manager were written for Windows 95, 98, or XP. Installing them on Windows 10 or 11 requires a few preparatory steps to ensure the program functions correctly.
