In the 1970s, Ceaușescu’s regime viewed Western music with deep suspicion. Rock was “decadent,” and disco, with its erotic undertones and celebration of hedonism, was largely banned from state radio and television. But you cannot kill a rhythm that wants to live.
Romanian musicians found clever ways to smuggle disco into the mainstream. The state-owned label Electrecord released albums that were officially labeled “easy listening” or “dance music for youth festivals.” But the syncopated bass lines, the four-on-the-floor kick drums, and the shimmering strings gave it away.

Still, for most Romanians, real disco came via illicit means: crackling shortwave radio picking up Radio Free Europe, or precious vinyl records smuggled from Yugoslavia or Italy. Young people would gather in private apartments, pull the curtains tight, turn down the volume, and dance to Boney M., Donna Summer, and Cerrone. The risk was real—a knock on the door could mean a fine, interrogation, or worse.
