Just because you’ve become a protagonist doesn’t mean everyone else has. You will encounter players who try to drag you back into the background. Beware of:
Your new protagonist rule: If they treat you like an NPC, they don’t get to be in your storyline.
Romance and relationships should not be a checklist of gifts or a single "sex scene." They are a character development mechanic. The goal is to make the NPC feel like they have a life before and after the player.

To avoid the "harem" feel, implement a Threshold Limit:

NPCs date on autopilot. Protagonists are present. When you are on a date, put your phone away. Listen. Respond to what they actually said, not what you expected them to say. This is the hardest boss fight for the modern dater.
