First airing in 2010 on Kanal D, Öyle Bir Geçer Zaman ki was created by the prolific writer Meral Okay. Set against the politically turbulent backdrop of the 1960s and 1970s, the show begins in Istanbul but quickly migrates to Australia, making it a unique transnational saga. Unlike many modern romantic Turkish dizis, this show is a family drama rooted in historical reality.
The story revolves around the Şaşmaz family. The patriarch, Ali Kaptan, is a traditional, principled fisherman. His wife, Cemile, is the emotional anchor of the home. Their three children—Ahmet, Oya, and Mete—each represent different struggles of youth caught between Eastern traditions and Western freedoms. When the family falls into economic despair, they migrate to Australia in search of the "golden dream." But what they find is a nightmare of deception, forbidden love, and a betrayal that tears the family apart for decades.
Episode 1 does not rush. Unlike Western pilots that often front-load action, this episode takes its time to introduce the Akarsu family. We see a seemingly stable household led by Ali Akarsu, a charismatic figure who appears to be the pillar of the community.
However, the brilliance of the writing lies in the cracks beneath the surface. The episode masterfully builds tension as we see Ali’s indiscretions and the introduction of the "other woman," Caroline. For the viewer, the dread comes from knowing that this house of cards is destined to fall. When the conflict finally erupts towards the end of the episode, the emotional payoff is devastatingly effective.
