Beacon is Palo Alto’s digital learning platform. Within Beacon, there are "Hands-On Labs" that utilize a simulated environment. These are not full CLI access, but they are guided.
Palo Alto provides BYOL (Bring Your Own License) images in cloud marketplaces.
This outlines the standard workflow for a simulation lab.
Step 1: Acquisition Log in to the Palo Alto Networks Support Portal. Navigate to Software Updates > VM-Series. Download the appropriate image (usually OVA for VMware/EVE-NG). palo alto firewall simulator

The Palo Alto Firewall Simulator refers to the deployment of the VM-Series Virtualized Next-Generation Firewall. It allows security engineers, students, and architects to simulate a fully functional Palo Alto firewall environment without purchasing physical hardware. It serves as a critical platform for lab testing, configuration practice, feature evaluation, and automation development.
Palo Alto Networks does not offer a full-featured, free, perpetual firewall simulator like Cisco’s Packet Tracer. However, several legitimate options exist for hands-on practice, ranging from time-limited virtual appliances to cloud-based sandboxes. Step 4: Web Interface Access Open a browser
Best for most learners → Palo Alto VM-Series (trial or lab license) + EVE-NG / GNS3
Best for certification (PCNSE) → Palo Alto Beacon (official, structured labs)
Best for quick testing → Strata Cloud Manager (limited, cloud-only)
Palo Alto Networks understands that customers need training wheels. They provide two primary official simulation tools.
