The film follows the Freeling family — Steven (a real estate agent), Diane (a homemaker), and their children Dana (16), Robbie (8), and Carol Anne (5) — living in a peaceful suburban California housing development built on a former cemetery.
Act 1: Strange Occurrences
Minor paranormal events begin: a chair moves on its own, dishes slide across the counter, and the TV constantly broadcasts static snow. Carol Anne talks to the static, saying, “They’re here.” Soon, objects fly around the room, and the real haunting begins.
Act 2: The Abduction
One night, a violent supernatural storm erupts inside the house. Carol Anne is pulled into a bright light that appears in her closet — she vanishes, but her voice can be heard through the TV static, crying, “Mommy? Daddy? Come get me.”
The Freelings hire parapsychologists Dr. Lesh and Ryan, plus medium Tangina Barrons. Tangina explains that Carol Anne is trapped in a “limbo” dimension (a psychic nexus) among restless spirits. Act 3: Rescue and Horror
Diane volunteers to enter the other side via a portal in the bedroom closet. She pulls Carol Anne out, but the Beast follows. The family flees the house, but the malevolent force grows stronger: a clown doll attacks Robbie, a tree tries to eat him, and corpses rise from the muddy backyard.
The final twist: the development was built on an unmarked cemetery. The graves were moved — but only the headstones, not the bodies. The spirits are angry, and the Beast is their rage made manifest.
Act 4: Escape
The Freelings escape the collapsing, possessed house. They check into a motel, but the final shot shows the TV in their room turning to static again — suggesting the evil is not finished.
