Urdu exegesis (Tafsir) often discusses the Taurat in the context of prophecies. A significant aspect of Urdu religious writing focuses on the belief that earlier scriptures foretold the coming of the Prophet Muhammad.
A famous couplet often recited in Urdu religious gatherings references the ancient prophecies:
Taurat mein hai zikr unka, Zabur mein hai bayan Jo aaye ga wo sarwar-e-do aalam Muhammad torah holy book in urdu
(Translation: His mention is in the Torah, the declaration is in the Psalms; he who will come is the leader of the two worlds, Muhammad.)

"کہو: ہم ایمان لائے اللہ پر اور جو کچھ ہم پر نازل ہوا اور جو کچھ ابراہیم، اسماعیل، اسحاق، یعقوب اور ان کی اولاد پر نازل ہوا، اور جو کچھ موسیٰ اور عیسیٰ کو دیا گیا اور جو کچھ دوسرے نبیوں کو ان کے رب کی طرف سے دیا گیا۔ ہم ان میں سے کسی کے درمیان فرق نہیں کرتے" (سورہ البقرہ: 136)
The word "Tawrat" comes from the Hebrew Torah, meaning "teaching" or "law." In Islamic belief, Allah revealed the Tawrat to Prophet Musa (علیہ السلام) on Mount Sinai (known in Urdu as Koh-e-Toor – کوہ طور).
