The engine uses a conventional water pump with a wax-type thermostat (opening at 82°C / 180°F). The thermostat is located on the lower front of the engine. Common failure points are the plastic heater hose connectors, which become brittle with age. The 1G-FE uses hydraulic lash adjusters (HLAs)
On early models, the distributor shaft seal and camshaft seal leak oil down the back of the engine. Fix: Replace both seals. The cam seal requires timing belt removal. The distributor seal can be done in situ.
