This paper explores the theme of “Walaloo Mana Barumsaa Koo” (The Poetry of My School) through the lens of Oromo oral and written poetic traditions. It argues that a school is not merely a building but a living poem—rich with metaphors of dawn, struggle, community, and hope. The “extra quality” in such poetry arises from deep cultural resonance, vivid imagery, and moral purpose. This analysis provides original verses and a critical reflection on how students can compose high-quality school poetry that preserves heritage while inspiring action.
Let me break this down:
| Standard School Life | Extra Quality (Saffisa Dabalataa) | | :--- | :--- | | Memorizing facts for an exam | Understanding the why behind the fact | | Running from class to class | Running toward a curiosity | | A passing grade | A passing grade plus a lesson for life | | A friend | A brother/sister from another mother |
Mana barumsaa koo taught me the standard curriculum. But the extra quality? That came from the moments between the lessons.

Translation (prose):
My school, hall of light – in your beauty, knowledge springs. In your beauty, life becomes learning, like dawn lighting the mind. Your rooms are not empty – word, number, law, love, struggle live there. As long as you exist, speech does not die; inside our hearts, your poetry flies. Extra quality – not sought – like the pure rain of Chaliya, a natural cleansing. Not to sing or chant, but to purify the mind. My school, you are the poem of life.
