X — Salome Gil

For Gil, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns in their artistic statements, the “x” serves as a rejection of the gender binary (male/female). In many of their manifestos posted to Discord and Telegram channels, Gil writes about the “x” as a placeholder for the self that refuses categorization.

"The 'x' marks the spot where identity dissolves. It is the mathematical variable for the soul. When you say 'Salome Gil x,' you are not naming a person; you are naming a possibility." — Excerpt from Gil’s unpublished digital zine, Glitch Angel (2023).

Not everyone applauds the rise of "Salome Gil x." Some purists argue that attaching an individual artist’s name to communal craft traditions risks a new kind of colonialism—elevating the “artist” while erasing the village. Gil has addressed this directly: on every tag, the weavers’ names are printed larger than her own. “I am the signature,” she admits, “but they are the sentence.”

Logistically, the "x" model is fragile. A single delayed monsoon can ruin a batch of natural dyes. A family illness in the cooperative can halt production for months. Gil has no investors and no inventory. She operates on a pre-order model that sometimes requires buyers to wait over a year. salome gil x

Once I have more information, I can help you develop a post that showcases Salomé Gil in a compelling and engaging way.

No cultural phenomenon is without its detractors. Critics of the “Salome Gil x” movement argue that the aesthetic has become a parody of itself. Writing for The New Yorker’s culture blog, critic M. H. Voss stated:

“The ‘x’ has become a crutch. It is an easy way to signal depth without actually committing to a thesis. Salome Gil x anything—a shoe, a song, a feeling—relies on the audience to do the meaning-making work. At a certain point, the glitch is just a broken image.” For Gil, who identifies as non-binary and uses

Furthermore, within the fan community, there is a schism between “Purists” (who believe the “x” should only be used for official Gil projects) and “Expansionists” (who use “Salome Gil x” as a prefix for any deconstructed art they create, effectively appropriating the name).

Gil has remained silent on these debates, responding only with an automated email that reads: “Your message has been received. Please wait an indeterminate amount of time. x.”

To understand the keyword, one must first understand the creator. Salome Gil is not a mainstream pop star nor a traditional Hollywood celebrity. Instead, Gil operates in the liminal space between performance art, digital curation, and avant-garde fashion. "The 'x' marks the spot where identity dissolves

Emerging from the underground scenes of Mexico City and later Barcelona, Gil built a reputation as a "visual deconstructionist." Her work often involves:

Her audience is niche but fiercely loyal. They are graphic designers, art students, and DJs who appreciate the intellectual rigor behind her visual chaos. However, it is the addition of the letter “x” that elevates her work from personal art to a cultural movement.

In early 2024, a trend emerged on TikTok where users would take a single frame of a Salome Gil video and “deconstruct” it using CapCut templates. These videos are titled “Salome Gil x Me” or “Salome Gil x My Trauma.” The trend has over 50 million collective views, turning Gil’s fragmented aesthetic into a template for Gen Z emotional expression.

Over the past 18 months, "Salome Gil x" pieces have moved from local ferias to design week showcases in Mexico City, Los Angeles, and Milan. A Salome Gil x Linotipia broadsheet (hand-printed on cactus-fiber paper) recently sold at auction for $2,400 USD—astronomical for a craft object, yet a fraction of what a comparable “art world” piece might command.

Collectors note that Gil refuses to scale. Each collaboration is capped at 50 units. This scarcity is deliberate. “I am not building a brand,” she says. “I am building a genealogy.”
